Dr. Jerome Segel - Author

Dr.J.D Segel- Author

Jerome (Jay) Segel was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1957. He completed his primary education in the northwestern suburban town of Farmington Hills. After undergradute studies at Wayne State and Michigan State Universities, Jay took his Medical Doctorate in Cleveland. He headed east, continuing his medical/surgical education at Harvard post-doctoral residency hospital, Cambridge City.
Spending off weekends at the cape and islands, Jay, and his then fiancé Michelle, also a Harvard resident, moved to Martha’s Vineyard in 1984 where they now live with Céline, and their three children Kevin, Vicki, Brad, three horses, five cats and a turtle.
A prolific writer of lyrics and instrumental guitar pieces, Dr. Segel has also authored two books published by the Genealogical Publishing Company (GPC) on real estate known as the Owner Unknown series. He holds patent of unique foot gear with Brine Sporting Goods, consulted for Apple Computer and Blue Cross/Blue Shield, project coordinator for the Health Care Finance Administration, contracted domestic and foreign research team leader for Native American tribes, and co-founded the New England Antiquarian Research and Title Ltd., also known as NEART.
Since its inception, the pricipals of NEART have identified manuscripts, historical maps, oseological remains, and archaelogic/ethnologic artifacts in archives, libraries, and specialty museums throughout Europe. Now Jay spends nearly one week in six researching American colonial history in Scotland, England, France, Belgium, Spain and/or the Netherlands. He continues to “Bring History Home” for Native American groups and lecture on the subject.


R. Andrew Pierce - Author

A.R.Pierce-Author

Richard Andrew Pierce, a native of New York City, has resided in Boston since 1979 where he majored in International Relations at Tufts University. He has been a professional genealogist since 1984. Mr. Pierce specializes in Irish-American lineages and tracing missing heirs. He has worked as a researcher, consultant, lecturer, and expert witness for Blake & Blake Genealogists of Braintree, Massachusetts since 1986. Formerly a member of the Enquiries Service at the prestigious New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston from 1986 to 1996, Pierce began a private Genealogical practice in Quincy, just south of Boston.
Andy, as he is called by his friends, has contributed to several articles for the New England Historic Genealogical Society’s Nexus magazine. Such contributions include the ancestry of the late United States President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. He has also contributed research to several published genealogical works, notably Gary Boyd Roberts’ Ancestry of American Presidents and Edmund K. Swigart’s Emerson-Benson Saga. Besides this work on the Wampanoag Genealogical History of Martha’s Vineyard..., he is the author of Inscriptions from Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A long time practitioner of Martial Arts, in 1995, Andy achieved his Black Belt in the discipline of Uechi-ryu Karate. Now member of the Appalachian Mountain Club and often a guide, Andy can be found most weekends enjoying the view atop any of many mountains in Northern New England.

Helen Edith Vanderhoop Manning - Contributor

Introduction
Helen Edith Vanderhoop Manning was born September 24, 1919. Her father, Arthur Herbert Vanderhoop was a Wampanoag Indian from Aquinnah. Her mother, Evelyn Moss Vanderhoop, was an artist and educator from Washington D. C. Growing up in these two rich and culturally diverse worlds, Helen matured and excelled in the best of both. She completed her primary and secondary education in Washington D. C., attending Dunbar High School and Teacher’s College. Helen received her Masters Degree from New York University in elementary education and her career spanned 45 years in Washington D. C. and Martha’s Vineyard. She is now retired and very active as an elder in tribal endeavors.

Catherine Merwin Mayhew - Contributor/Editor

How To Use This Book
Kay has served as the genealogist for the Martha's Vineyard Historical Society for over twelve years. She has worked in genealogy for thirty years. Her published works range from the family genealogy in The History of Belair (Maryland) and several editions of the Genealogical Periodical Annual Index to adding fifty pages to the Vital Records of Chilmark, Massachusetts, to 1850. She has also lectured in the field and taught classes. She does research professionally as well as on behalf of the Historical Society.

Ashley Hunter - Contributor/Editor (Computer Tech.)

Ashley Hunter was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1951 and moved to Martha’s Vineyard in 1974. He and Jay Segel became friends and formed the Martha’s Vineyard Mac User Group in 1994. Together they have helped many Apple Computer users with a variety of computer related concerns. Concentrating on systems administration and hardware repairs over the last ten years, Ashley has become the islands Mac expert. So, as this book became ready for pre-production, Ashley was the obvious choice to make it camera ready.

Ronald Monterosso, Esq. - Contributor/Editor

Impact Of Colonial Law
On Genealogical and Historical Research Born in Connecticut, Ronald Monterosso spent much of his professional career in New York City before moving to Martha’s Vineyard. He graduated from Vassar College and later obtained a Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law. While an associate laywer he obtained a Masters of Law degree from New York University School of Law. Since coming to the Vineyard in 1985 he has done extensive research into Native American land titles on Chappaquiddick and Aquinnah. Ron has lectured on Native American history at The Vineyard Museum and co-founded NEART with Jay Segel. Together they conduct European research for Native American Tribes.

Dana Gaines - Contributor (Cartographer)

Dana Gaines was born and raised on Martha’s Vineyard where he developed a deep respect for the natural world and a keen interest in human settlement history. He published his first illustrated map in 1983 and continues to create images, professionally, which are both decorative and educational. Dana writes he “is honored to contribute the map illustration for this project.”


Mark Cohen -Executive Editor

Mark Cohen grew up on Cape Cod Massachusetts and has been coming to Martha’s Vineyard since 1994. He attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he majored in Anthropology. Now a performing musician and songwriter, Cohen has released two CDs of his own original music. He met Jay Segel in 1995 and the two eventually would collaborate on musical projects. Mark is a stickler for clarity, detail and economy of thought, and thus he was the logical choice for Executive Editor.

Joan Walsh -Contributor (Original Artwork)

Born in Ireland, Joan Walsh graduated with honors from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. Before moving to Martha’s Vineyard in 1989 she won many awards and exhibited frequently. In 1999 Joan was commissioned to paint a poster of Oak Bluffs’ Flying Horses, the oldest working carousel in the U.S.A. Joan wrote and illustrated her first book, Precious Moments on Martha’s Vineyard Part One, which was published in July of 2002.
